Life with pets is full of joy, but regular veterinary care can be challenging for working pet parents, especially on weekends and evenings when many clinics are closed. As your local weekend veterinarians in Red Deer, Urgent Paws Veterinary Clinic is here to help answer common questions pet owners have when an unexpected health concern arises.

Will Pet Insurance Cover Emergency Vet Visits?

Most pet insurance plans cover urgent or emergency visits, especially when the condition is unforeseen, such as injuries, sudden illness or toxin exposure. Having a copy of your policy on hand can speed up the claims process, and many clinics provide documentation to help you submit a claim after your visit.

Will Pet Insurance Cover Emergency Surgery?

In most cases, pet insurance does at least partially cover emergency surgery. Life-saving procedures such as wound repair, foreign body removal or urgent abdominal surgery are often covered under comprehensive plans, though you may be responsible for a deductible or co-payment.

If surgery is recommended during an urgent visit at Urgent Paws, the veterinary team can explain the recommended options and provide cost estimates to assist with your decisions.

When Should I Take My Cat to the Vet?

Cats are masters at hiding discomfort, so pay close attention to changes in behaviour. You should consider taking your cat to an emergency vet when you notice:

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Persistent vomiting or diarrhea

  • Straining to urinate or signs of pain; urinating outside the litter box.

  • Sudden lethargy or collapse

  • Signs of poisoning or toxin ingestion (chocolate, grapes, raisins, plants, medications, rodenticide, chemicals, etc.)

  • Sudden lethargy or collapse

  • Abdominal bloating

  • Can't get into their regular vet for urgent matters

If these issues arise on a weekend or after regular hours, a visit to Urgent Paws can provide rapid evaluation and care.

Take a look at our Triage Chart for specific information:

Does My Dog Need to Go to the Vet?

Dogs are usually more expressive than cats, but it can still be tough for owners to judge whether an issue is urgent. We recommend seeking emergency vet care if your dog experiences:

  • Severe limping or obvious injury

  • Trouble breathing or persistent coughing

  • Continuous seizures

  • Ingestion of a harmful substance

  • Excessive bleeding or open wounds

For non-life-threatening emergencies, always proceed to Urgent Paws during our daytime, evening or weekend hours. If you need emergency assistance outside these hours, please contact your nearest Emergency Department.
